There’s something painful about watching a relay race where the baton is dropped. In the 2008 Olympics, both the U.S. men’s and women’s 4x100 teams failed to finish—not because they weren’t fast or trained, but because the handoff failed.

In many ways, the Church faces the same challenge. We are not only called to run our leg of the race with faith and endurance — we are called to pass on the mission Jesus gave us: worship, fellowship, evangelism, discipleship, and service.

When we think of “ministry,” many imagine preachers, missionaries, or staff members. But Jesus redefined greatness by saying, “Whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant... for even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve.” (Matthew 20:26–28)

Service Is Not Optional — It’s Essential

Serving isn’t something a few people do to keep church running. It’s the calling of every believer. Scripture calls all of us “a royal priesthood,” and priests serve. When we serve, we reflect the heart of Jesus and become the Church He intended.

In the feeding of the 5,000 (Mark 6), we see a beautiful picture of ministry in motion. Jesus had compassion on the crowd. The disciples organized and distributed. A young boy shared what little he had. God multiplied it. That’s how service works — a team effort of compassion, obedience, and trust.

Everyone Has Something to Offer

You don’t have to preach a sermon or sing a solo to serve meaningfully. Your part might be praying, organizing meals, helping behind the scenes, or just showing up to listen to someone who’s struggling.

Even the smallest task — like rocking a baby in the nursery or straightening chairs — matters. Jesus took five loaves and two fish and fed thousands. What might He do with your faithful “yes”?

Discover How God Has SHAPED You

We believe God has uniquely designed each person for service. That’s why we’re offering a SHAPE Assessment to help you explore your Spiritual gifts, Heart (passions), Abilities, Personality, and Experiences. (Forms available here.)

You may discover you’re wired to lead a small group, encourage others through hospitality, or mentor a younger believer. Wherever your SHAPE leads, we want to help you grow and serve with joy.

What’s Next?

We're praying for God to raise up small group leaders — not polished teachers, but caring guides willing to open their homes or hearts to others. If you feel a nudge to serve in that way, let’s talk. We’ll equip you, support you, and walk beside you.

The church is never stronger than when its people are serving. Let’s not be a church that watches ministry happen — let’s be the church that makes it happen.
